Our Story

Cornwallville Residents for Rural Preservation (CRRP) is a community‐based organization whose mission is to preserve the rural character of the hamlet of Cornwallville in the Town of Durham. CRRP was formed in late 2020 after an out-of-town developer, Bosque Development LLC, purchased the largest undeveloped swath of land (approx. 95 acres) in the central area of Cornwallville, and announced plans to subdivide it.

The Bosque proposal includes the construction of a 2400-foot private road running through the property, 12 new houses, a barn/residence for parties and other events, and a farm operation for the exclusive use of the Bosque community.

Since the Bosque proposal was first unveiled, CRRP has endeavored to show the negative impact a new housing development will have on the community character of Cornwallville, the natural habitat, the environment, road safety, noise and light pollution, as well as the historic character of the hamlet. The proposed development lies entirely within the Cornwallville Historic District which was designated by the Town of Durham Historic Preservation Commission over 30 years ago.

Unfortunately, the Durham Town Board has ignored the adverse impacts that this project will almost certainly have, and in April 2022, voted to grant preliminary approval for the Bosque subdivision. The matter is now in the courts. CRRP has filed an Article 78 Petition in New York State Supreme Court against Bosque and the Town of Durham. We are asking the court to at least require the preparation of an Environmental Impact Statement before Bosque is permitted to move ahead.

We are grateful that the Cornwallville community has been overwhelmingly supportive of our efforts.

Remember, we are all in this together, and we can prevail.
