The Full Story

The history of the Strong house actually predates the Strong family. When Anson Strong bought the property from Ezra Jones in 1806, the house and 70 acre farm, was already built and being taxed since the late 1700's. The first story of the house used local hemlock for its large beams, wide floor boards and even used thick hemlock planks for vertical walls. At a later date in the early 1800's, the Strong family raised the roof and added a second story with more conventional framing. The house took on a more Federal style that is typical of other Greene County homes built during that era.

Strong Rd. was named in honor of the Strong family since they were one of the original settlers to Cornwallville and generations of Strongs had lived in the house for 140 years. You can now find many of the Strong family interred in the Cornwallville Cemetery.
